Book critique:
This assignment was to read a book and answer 3 questions based on if it was fiction or not. We also had to add an extra paragraph stating if we would recommend the book we read and why. By doing this assignment we are supposed to be engaged in a book and always have something to do on our free time.
What I learned by doing this assignment was that reading books doesn't have to be boring. The book I read was entitled Stuck by lightning. Reading this book helped me understand that reading doesn't have to be boring because you can read other people's life. I usually don't read for fun but now that I know how many options there are,I would read in my free time.
Secretes of the Parthenon study guided:
This assessment was composed of questions and answers based on the document Secretes of the Parthenon. The documentary was about the reconstruction of the Parthenon and the difference of how the Athenians built it and how we are building it now. The questions were simple follow up questions related on what we were watching and we had to answer with precision.
The things that left me impressed were that they didn't know how the Athenians built it so perfect and fast. We are spending so much money and time rebuilding what the Athenians built in 15 years, we are taking more than the triple amount of time to just restore it. Another thing that left me in shock was the amount of money they are spending. The historical value it has has to be huge for them to be spending millions of dollars on it. What I learned was how smart the athenians are, because they have to be at least agricultural smarter than. We have newer technology and we still can't figure out how the Athenians built the Parthenon.
The Iliad Formulating questions:
For this formulating questions we had to read the Iliad write down five questions we have and answer them. We also had to find five S.A.T. words and their definitions. At last we had to write a one paragraph reflection on what we learned by doing that assignment.
What I learned was that at the end smart people always get what they planned for. I also learned that if you start something someone else might end it in a bad way. This story relates to real life in many ways by given a conflict and not a very clear end.
Trojan Women essay:
This assignment was to choose if The Trojan Women sent an antiwar message or if it didn't. We had to write five paragraphs explaining our thesis giving examples from that came from Trojan Women. One paragraph was our introduction, the next three where our body paragraphs, and at last came the conclusion. In the introduction we had to state in what position we're in. The three body paragraph were to state evidences that support your thesis. The conclusion just restates your thesis with more evidence.
What I learned by doing this essay was how important evidence is. The evidence you quote from the passage make your essay significantly better. Since this was an argumentative essay I also learned that not only evidence matters but also your argument you make after matters. If you have a good argument that is linked to your piece of evidence than you have a good paragraph.
(Second Semester)
Socratic seminars:
Before we started each seminar we all read the same article and found what we though was the thesis. Socratic seminar depended on our opinions and the text. If the seminar was hold only by a few people it wasn't interesting but when everyone gave their opinion it was full with different point of views. The purpose of this assignment was to get everyone engaged on reading a text and sharing their opinions with the class.
By doing this assignment I learned that everyone has different perspective and opinions, but that didn't mean they were wrong. Another thing that i've improved on because of the socratic seminar is my listening skills. Seminars aren't just about stating your opinions, but it's also about hearing other peoples opinions.
Splash page Organizational Piece:
In order to get an A on this project we had to create a splash page based on our science fiction comic books. A splash or splash page is a large, often full-page illustration which opens and introduces a story. It is rarely less than half a page, and occasionally covers two pages. Often designed as a decorative unit, its purpose is to capture the reader's attention, and can be used to establish time, place and mood.
Since my comic book was about a dad fighting an alien to get his son back, I made my splash page about a dad on the floor, thinking of his kidnap son. Doing this page helped me learn more photoshop skills and it enlarged my imagination. What I learned while doing this page is how to capture a reader's attention based on a illustration.
A.A.A:
An AAA is meant to help us understand the author’s argument and whether or not it is valid. To complete this assignment we must include at least five vocabulary words defined. We had to add two paragraphs about the argument, our thoughts and analyzation. Look for the thesis statement, which is one sentence that states the author’s argument. Look for three supporting evidence throughout the text. Analyze the argument. Answer the question: “Do you agree or disagree?” And write a short reflection separate from the writing, on what we've learned.
I would consider this assignments one of the hardest assignments they hand out, because it has so much to it. Nevertheless this assignment help me improve my reading, my understanding, and my writing skills.
